TODAY IS INTERNATIONAL NACHO DAY

N

Every year on October 21st, people around the world celebrate International Nacho Day and the flavorful, delectable nacho. The day also encourages others to try nachos for the first time ever.

This popular appetizer also makes a great snack. If the nachos contain enough toppings, many nacho lovers eat them as an entire meal. When most people think of nachos, they think of tortilla chips topped with melted cheese. However, it is never wrong to pile on loads of ingredients!

Some of the tastiest nacho toppings include:

  • Hamburger or shredded chicken
  • Black olives
  • Red onions
  • Pico de gallo
  • Refried beans
  • Grilled corn
  • Sour cream
  • Avocado
  • Shredded lettuce

To really spice things up, some people add jalapeno peppers.

Not surprisingly, nachos originated in Mexico. The exact origin is a small town in Northern Mexico called Piedras Negras. The town is just across the border from Eagle Pass, Texas. Restaurant owner, Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya invented the tasty food in 1943. What is surprising is that he invented nachos for Americans!

As the story goes, Ignacio had to conjure up a quick snack for some U.S. military wives while they were in town. He quickly fried some tortillas and topped them with warm cheese and jalapenos. When asked what to call the food, Ignacio replied, “Nacho’s special.”

Nachos became a hit in Texas before spreading to the entire Southwest United States. In the 1970s, the popularity of nachos increased when the Texas Rangers baseball team began to sell them at Arlington Stadium. Today, stadiums, restaurants, and pubs throughout the world serve nachos to their patrons.

Some countries even have their own special version of nachos. In Jamaica, they serve nachos with jerk pork. The Greeks substitute pita chips for the tortilla chips and topped them with feta cheese, cucumber, red onion, and tzatziki sauce. Indian nachos can be made with toasted naan bread and topped with curry powder and mozzarella cheese.

HOW TO OBSERVE #InternationalDayOfTheNacho

The best way to celebrate this day is to eat nachos! You can create your own version of nachos at home or order some at a local restaurant. Get a group of friends together and eat nachos for lunch. Eat your nachos with toppings you’ve never tried before. You could also eat nachos while watching the movie, Nacho Libre. Be sure to take a picture of your nachos and share them on social media with #InternationalDayOfTheNacho
